Enola Gay dropped the nuclear bomb*

At 08:15 am local time, the US B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay (named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot Paul Tibbets) dropped the nuclear bomb called Little Boy over the central part of Hiroshima, Japan. It was dropped from about 31,000 feet (9450 m). and exploded about 600 meters (2,000 feet) above the city. The bomb was a uranium fission weapon and the yield was in the region of 20,000 tons of TNT. Sixty percent of the city is destroyed in the blast and the firestorm that follows. About 80,000 Japanese are killed. Many more are severely burned and others become ill later, from exposure to radiation. It is not the most devastating bombing attack of the war but the economy of the effort involved in sending only one plane on a mission to destroy a city shows only too well the complete change in military and political thinking which has begun.
