To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.-- Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Rash, Rash, Rash...

You should know better than to allow these young punks to have a say in something as deep as this!

For any of you who do not understand the context (or wacky language) of this quote, the first few lines give it away:
Line 1 = Should I live or die, I wonder
Line 2-3 = Is it better to stand up for yourself and fight for your sanity and make something of your life
Line 4-5 = Or should you kill yourself to end the suffering from all the crap that life throws at you

Note that Shakespeare uses the title of a Star Trek movie (or rather, they borrowed it from him) on line 24! If any of you cretins have not read Hamlet, although it is very difficult to read and understand, it has become the source of so many phrases and expressions that have become part of the English language. If you can't handle the reading, Mel Gibson does a great job in the 1996 Hamlet

Shakespeare = Overrated gibberish not written by the man himself.

Not worthy of any thought in todays society.... it's clung on to like the long dead language of Latin is in the American educational system.

Time to shred all evidence of this literary toilet paper and concentrate on teaching people then language that is before them now.. not 400 year old tripe.. they can barely understand modern English let alone this waste of space...

The answer is NOT TO BE

HaB, you wound me to the quick!

There are 2 very important reasons for people to not only read, but study, Shakespeare and they both will help them understand modern English:

1) The meter and complexity of Shakespeare (regardless of who wrote it) is intentional and valuable in the understanding of prose, which also happens to be the basis of modern music (yes, including rap) and will develop an appreciation in the thought involved with planned structure in all written language.

2) In the same way that a doctor would be remiss for treating symptoms without any regard for the cause of an ailment, those who intend to USE language should understand not only the history of language, but the history of the construction of words and phrases [more true of Latin, but the older English has some good bits too].

So there!

Which of course, makes the answer a resounding TO BE!

And I'm not even an English teacher, but I have been married to one for over 15 years

well, my argument for keeping Shakespeare about is that, regardless of who wrote it and when, regardless of how good or bad it is, it's "classic theatre" that nearly every theatre company in the world performs at one time or another. Seeing as how my chosen profession is to build sets for theatre, Shakespeare makes up a significant portion of the sets I will likely be building, thus helping to ensure that I will have work in the future.

Thank you, Bill Shakes. I like money.

shakespear is just so god damn boring

I've studied romeo and juliet, and that one with the witches.....macbeth, and both were bloody boring. a few interestingly written passages but nothing to shout out about.

Then again i'm an english schoolchild, i guess every one of us thinks like this. Writing and english language in general have always bored the pants off of me, it's only very recently with my philosophical studies that i've even given shakespear a second thought, what with having to be able to use language effectivley...blah blah SHUT UP THINK

NOT TO BE if thta means i never have to hear the word shakespear again

The fact that Amish had to provide a translation shows just how bad the problem is. Although some of his ideas are still relevant (Romeo & Juliet = West Side Story) The style of writing is too old to be fully understood and appreciated by most people. I've seen copies that had more footnotes on the page than play text. Its practically a foreign language.

As for HaB's comment about Latin, I spent 2 years at Oxford. The Brits love their Latin just as much. Greek, too!

Again the foolish are duped into thinking shakespeare has any value. It's a mockery that has been placed upon a pedestal to be praised by those who think it's masterful and a work of genuis and revered by many pretentious souls.

I would rather burn every copy of his works in existance than to have to sit through 10 minutes of another awful production of A mid summer night's dream. Truely the dullest theatre I have every had to sit through.

And what a cop out to say 'no matter who wrote it'.. if you are defending this literary drivel and and saying how you have have to understand and study the language to know it's historyand pattern and usage, then it should matter that he was not educated, had not travelled to any of the places his works refer to or have any first hand knowledge and could not have the vocabulary available to him to produce the works.

And providing a translation.. hmm doesn't underscore the problem of people not understanding, it shows that that the use of language has no relevance. Romeo and &Juliet.. not his idea... the story is older than him (and Road) and he gets credit for having his name on the most published and known version ot that story.

Usagi you must have been in Oxford hundreds of years ago, and 17th century English is a different language, not only in written but spoken form and resembles very little of modern speach.

In the same way that a doctor would be remiss for treating symptoms without any regard for the cause of an ailment ??? What has this got to do with it... it's a poor analogy.

It's high time Shakespeare was put to rest and consign his works to fueling a power station to provide electrical power to some struggling 3rd world country.. Send them your copies and your first editions and let them burn to provide those less fortunate and those lucky enough to not have suffered reading or watching his plays have power... there is enough of this published bowel movement to keep it burning for decades

I liked Much Ado About Nothing.. not that I've ever read Shakespeare, but I saw the movie with Keanu Reeves.

I believe I could effectively use the English language without having ever heard of Shakespeare or understanding the history of the language.

If not Shakespeare (he is definiatly not the best or even close to best English writer/poet/etc) who else are we supposed to learn from? There are better and more entertaining writers (poe) but not many match the volumes of Shakespeare. Even if his ideas are not original, no one's are. It is impossible to think that you were the first person to make an idea about the basic concept of Romeo & Juliet after 40,000 years of homosapien existance. The idea of Romeo and Juliet may have been borrowed from a poem, but the fact still stands, who ever wrote all of this work, has an unmatchable volume of respected and enjoyed work.

Learn from ? there is nothing to learn from these works other than the deception of the author and that it is a language spoken only by thespians with a sad devotion to those who want to enjoy something that should have perished centuries ago....

Oh please ... I can't wait for someone to find a goat skin with the primitive scratching's of early man and turn that into a play... wow how exciting and beautiful it will be to hear something that echoed across the country long before writting ever existed.. how about Aborigine and Juliet that sounds great... or even Cro-magnon Merchant of Venice...

Time to move on and drop this crap... anything older than 1900 should be recylced and turned in to the cardboard 4 cup holder they give you at Mcdonalds

We could go back and forth on this for years (as many have before us), but unless you really think that all those teachers have been bamboozled into teaching these works, there must be a little more merit that you are aware of.

And, of course, there is the amazing list of words and terms that he (that possibly unknown author) made up:
academe , accused, addiction, advertising, amazement, arouse , assassination, backing, bandit, bedroom, beached , besmirch, birthplace, blanket, bloodstained, barefaced, blushing, bet, bump, buzzer, caked, cater, champion, circumstantial, cold-blooded, compromise, courtship, countless, critic, dauntless, dawn, deafening, discontent, dishearten, drugged, dwindle, epileptic, equivocal, elbow, excitement, exposure, eyeball, fashionable, fixture, flawed, frugal, generous, gloomy, gossip, green-eyed, gust, hint, hobnob, hurried, impede, impartial, invulnerable, jaded, label, lackluster, laughable, lonely, lower, luggage, lustrous, madcap, majestic, marketable, metamorphize, mimic, monumental, moonbeam, mountaineer, negotiate, noiseless, obscene, obsequiously, ode, olympian, outbreak, panders, pedant, premeditated, puking, radiance, rant, remorseless, savagery, scuffle, secure, skim milk, submerge, summit, swagger, torture, tranquil, undress, unreal, varied, vaulting, worthless, zany. Just that list alone should get the guy a little respect.

You failed to connect my analogy; there is method to the use of language in these works. There is a depth that most of the comments made in this thread either underestimate or miss. So many people find Shakespeare, Dickens, etc boring because they don't GET IT; they're used to being spoon-fed their thoughts, instead of having to work to extract them. The reason that "Flavor of Love 2," that VH1 train wreck of a "reality" show, is so popular is that people would rather rubberneck at an accident scene than invest time in understanding something that's requires thought and imagination.
